Murdoch announces News of the World closure

News International chairman James Murdoch has announced that the last ever edition of the News of the World will be released on Sunday 7th July 2011.

The newspaper was first published in October 1843 and was aimed at the working classes, it was the cheapest newspaper and has covered on celebrity-based scoops and populist news.

The closure of the News of the World comes after claims were made that the newspaper authorised hacking of mobile phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.

Chairman James Murdoch has said that all proceeds from the last edition of the News of the World would go to a good cause.
