What is the biggest revolution in the Retail industry over the past 10 years?

During the past decade, the Retail industry has seen some of the most powerful - positive and negative - upheavals in Retailing history. One of the largest revolutions that must be considered is the arrival of accessible internet for the public. This coupled with the constantly updating mobile phone technology has put the ‘spending power’ very much back in the hands of the consumer.

At the turn of the 21st Century, online shopping was more of novelty – and coined ‘a flash in the technology pan’ by some leading retailers. However at present the British Consumers are spending approx £5bn per month online, and according to Forester Research by 2014 $1 in every $12 spent in the US will be over the internet.

Aside from the flexibility for the consumer of online stores – that never close – the global recession which still looms in the consumers thoughts, have meant that the Internets ability to quickly research, compare and assess any purchase has put an end to ‘high price means high quality’ thinking.

However over the last 30 years, there has been another major revolution in retail. Although less poignant and almost unseen until this past decade, it is still very much a revolution in its self. This is the Self Service revolution.

With the grocery industry faced with lowered profit margins and high staffing costs, the self service checkout and interactive kiosks have help many retailers keep books balanced and profits high.

Studies have demonstrated a six-hundred percent boost in employee efficiency when self-service checkouts are implemented, allowing businesses to cut staffing costs while simultaneously raising their overall output levels. Despite early security hiccups, self-service checkouts are also relatively safe. Weight sensors and other helpful additions have kept theft levels low, while the monitoring and assistance of employees allows even the least technically minded user to operate a self checkout unit easily. Consumers and businesses are in agreement: self-service checkouts are great for the grocery industry.
